Book recommendations for my Mom?
She won’t read anything that she thinks has a nerdy connotation, which means nothing marketed as fantasy, science fiction, or horror. She won’t read young adult, anything too long, classics, or anything she realizes is published before the 21st century.
She keeps track of her books online, and she gave these negative ratings-
The Doctor’s Wife, She Said Yes, Swimsuit, Off Season, The Associate, The Memory Keeper’s Daughter, House of Sand and Fog, Always Looking Up, The Edge of Winter, Icy Sparks, For One More Day, The Five People you Meet in Heaven, My Sister’s Keeper, Into the Wild, Eat, Pray, Love, At First Sight, The Friday Night Knitting Club, The Tenth Circle, Dear John, Kiss the Girls, Memoirs of a Geisha, Nights in Rodanthe, The Lovely Bones, The Guardian, Crime and Punishment.
She didn’t give any books positive ratings.
Infinity- I agree. She made a resolution to read 12 books a year though.
Try -
1. The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl (a murder mystery)
2. On Beauty by Zadie Smith (might be too long?)
3. The Road by Cormac McCarthy (a story about a man and his son during a nuclear winter)
4. The Known World by Edward P. Jones (a little long and published in the 90’s, but REALLY GOOD, about a black slave owner in the antebellum south)
5. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime (a murder mystery from the POV of an autistic boy)
6. The Time Traveller’s Wife by Audry Niffenegger (about a man who shifts unexpectedly into different time periods–not a sci-fi book even though there are some sci-fi elements)
7. A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers (about a guy who takes care of his little brother after his parents die)

I’ve never said this before, but maybe she should watch tv.

It sounds like she doesn’t like emotional books. Maybe she should try mystery or thriller books, like James Patterson or John Grisham.

I highly recommend "The Time Traveller’s Wife." Great, romantic book, without being cheesy (I’m not a fan of romance, but I loved this book!)
Any book by Jodi Picoult or Mitch Albom.

Tell your mom that she’s a close-minded bitch because there are few to no books that will meet her specifications.
